Famous Left-handers

Liste bekannter Linkshänder aus USA

We check every entry - but we're not quite finished working through the list yet. You can recognize a verified entry because there is a separate paragraph about the person in question with our assessment of whether they are really a prominent left-hander.

Many people, often from creative professions or particularly intelligent representatives of their craft, appear to us to be ambidextrous because they have often had to deal with right-handed tools in their lives and have thus achieved a much higher level of practice with their weak hand than right-handers ever will reach on their left.
These cases are difficult to verify. It is also difficult to assess people who have died a long time ago.

We look at photos, videos and read biographies, interviews and background reports. We therefore ask for your indulgence if we do not already have an assessment for every celebrity. We're working on it!

Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790) was an American statesman, author, scientist and inventor. He is considered one of the founding fathers of the United States, drafting the US Declaration of Independence, inventing the lightning rod and improving bifocal glasses. Franklin received numerous honors.

It is always difficult to prove the handedness of a person who has died a long time ago. Benjamin Franklin is considered left-handed for two reasons. In the painting by Dean Morrissey, "Ben Franklin, Patriot and Renaissance Man", he is depicted with a pen in his left hand. In addition, Benjamin Franklin wrote a short essay, "Petition of the Left Hand", in which he speaks out against training the right hand exclusively.

Unfortunately, both pieces of evidence are only circumstantial. The essay can be interpreted as meaning that he was not unaware of his parents and teachers retraining him to use his right hand. However, they can also be interpreted as meaning that he advocates training both hands for health reasons in order to be able to lead an independent life in the event of an emergency (rheumatism, gout, amputation).

It is similar with the painting. The majority of paintings of him show him with a pen in his right hand. This could then be interpreted as meaning that he was retrained and that the painting was created in connection with or in reference to the essay.

From our point of view, it gets a thumbs up. We cannot say for sure, but the evidence is quite strong, as right-handed people often do not have the same experience and would therefore neither write such an essay nor be depicted with a pen in their left hand.
